Vitamin K

The last of the vitamins we will consider. The K vitamins form another family of fat soluble vitamins.

It is involved in blood coagulation and metabolic pathways in bones.

Vitamin E – another family

As with the ‘B’ and ‘D’ vitamins, vitamin E is a family eight of molecules. Four are classed as Tocopherols and four as Tocotrienols. Both sets of four molecules are named alpha (α), beta (β), gamma (γ) and delta (δ).

Meets the ‘B’s

Thursday’s posting was an introduction into the family of ‘B’ vitamins. Today we will consider the role of each B vitamin in the body and the associated deficiency diseases.

In general, the ‘B’ vitamins are needed for a whole variety of different roles in the body, from the immune system and nervous system to muscles and  skin to metabolism.

Vitamins – An introduction

What are vitamins? We hear the word almost daily but are we actually clear as to what it means?

It is hard to exactly define a vitamin, but it is often referred to as a small molecule that is essential for an organisms to survive. The vitamin cannot be synthesized by the organism, or, cannot be synthesized in sufficiently large enough amounts.
