At HL level, one of the requirements of the Production Portfolio evaluation is that our students each create an individual trailer for their film. The trailer section of the Portfolio is like a court of last appeals. It can demonstrate skills and talent that may have been submerged in group work, and really show a student’s ability in their chosen role. Nevertheless, the trailers often seem to have been created as an afterthought – at their worst they are comprised of a series of fade-to-blacks with hyperbolic intertitles.
Just as the best preparation to make a short film is watching short films, the best preparation to create a trailer is to watch trailers. It’s especially important to look at trailers from a variety of genres and time periods – as the choices our students have are much broader than they think.
