Connecting

For those of us who teach Social and Cultural Anthropology, we have already experienced the rewards it offers in developing students’ abilities to encounter, investigate and take leadership on world issues. However, up until now, many of us may have kept the power of this course to ourselves. Thanks to Eileen Dombrowski, anthropology’s important role in an IBO education has been highlighted. Sir Ken and Teachers as Gardeners

I had the fortunate opportunity to be a part of an Elluminate session with Sir Ken Robinson a couple of weeks ago. The event was organized by Steve Hargadon through LearnCentral — a marvelous resource for events like these and more. If you don’t know who Ken Robinson is, and have never seen his now-famous TEDTalk, you can view it here (apologies – I had hoped to embed it in this post but it appears that I cannot). Steve Hargadon was interviewing Sir Ken for his series on The Future of Education, and specifically about the ideas contained in his new book, The Element, a follow-up to Robinson’s previous book, Out of Our Minds (a fantastic read, by the way). The event itself was memorable and inspiring, as anything involving Sir Ken always is. There were some major take-aways for me that specifically are applicable not only to teaching and learning in general, but to how we deal with creativity in our classrooms.
