Cold Isotope Chemistry

Isotopes react in the same way, don’t they?

Chemical reactions are unaffected by the isotopic composition so the percentage of different isotopes of the same element in a substance would be the same as the percentage of each naturally occurring isotope.

Ok, so you made your students work last week, asking them what could the first controlled chemical reaction by mankind have been? (it was fire).

So this week, ask them ‘What was the second chemical reaction to be controlled by mankind?’

Lets make an assumption (a dangerous thing, I know!). Man has built a Moon base. Where will the power come from?

Transporting fuel to the moon is not cost effective. Solar panels? Well, they need to be transported there as well and a lunar night lasts fourteen days! How about…..

Solid – Solid Phase Reactions

Most of the reactions we carry out in the lab involve a liquid reacting with another liquid, a liquid reacting with a solid or a solid reacting with a gas. There are no solid – solid reactions. Why? (You can post your reasons below) – if you cannot think of any please contact me!

The following clip shows that solid – solid reactions do occur and they can be quite vigorous!
