precautionary principle

When teaching the Precautionary principle its important that students are able to clearly articulate the concept.

I show the video below emphasising that the principle holds that those who wish to continue producing greenhouse gases should prove that there are no harmful effects before continuing.

Demise of the Bluefin Tuna

The plight of fish can be a hard one, especially if they taste nice. They also suffer from not being as cute or as cuddly as a panda and therefore do not grab as much attention in the media and the wider public’s consciousness as other species heading for extinction. The plight of the bluefin tuna is a case in point.

It is hard to be positive about the future of our planet when politics and economic interests collide with the cold reality of an ever dwindling population that by its reduced numbers becomes ever more valuable to catch.

Earth day and the Precautionary Principle

During school today I was shown the first video below, advertising Earth Hour. It struck me that the primary claim, ‘The need for urgent action is now indisputable’ in some quarters remains very questionable.

A possible TOK and Aim 8 teaching point?  Does the very nature of the event highlight / ignores what could be done all year round? e.g. Why is Sidney harbour bridge decorated through the night? Yes the Eiffel tower looks pretty all lit up but…
