Perfluorinated Chemicals (PFCs) (or Fluorocarbons) are essentially alkane but with the ’H’sreplaced with ‘F’. They are extremely stable compounds – much more stable than alkanes (why?)
They have a variety of uses – as water repellents (in clothing and furniture), non-stick items (such as frying pans and in floor waxes or coated paper.
Every Sunday, I enjoy sitting down to read the Sunday papers. In the UK, these are packed with supplements and mini papers. The largest on the market is the Sunday Times and there is really enough information in it to last a good week. A few weeks back, one of its supplements, (the Sunday Times Magazine …. I think it was) contained an excellent article.
The article dealt with chemicals inside us. It detailed a number of man made chemicals that are found in everyday items and that bio accumulate in our bodies…..
