My Final feedback from the Internal assessment moderation process

Almost finished. I have 15 students left which could mean anything from 30 to 9o separate experiments to read through (my present school I am working on has 6 students and 36 separate assignments). My last school had 8 students and sixteen experiments as each student designed two complete experiments.

I have found the whole experience invaluable. It has shown me what other schools do and really brought home to me what to look for in each criteria that I mark. It will most definitely impact my classroom next year.

IA moderation

I am now well into moderating my IA samples of labs and would like to share some of my experiences. In total I have 108 students to work through which I guess approximates to a minimum of 216 labs.

As I mark I am constantly referring to the  guidelines from the published Biology guide found on the OCC website. I have also been reminded that I am moderating and not marking and I should try and go with the teacher where ever possible. However, many of the samples I am marking have no comments from teachers, which can make it rather difficult on occasion to go with the teachers grade. I need to read the argument put forth why a grade should be given, especially if its a borderline one. When I have it I am far more inclined to go with the teacher than if they do not. One school did not circle which labs I should mark for which criteria. E.g. I received three full labs and for a criteria for which there were three 5′s I had to chose myself.

Preparing your IA sample

If you are a ‘May’ session school it is that time of year again – you need to start thinking about getting your IA results up to date and your marks sent off to the IB. Once that has been done, you will be told which students work will have to be sent to the moderator.

Here are a few reminders / tips to help the moderator and the moderation process:

Starting to think about the CRB?

Following on from last week’s blog focus on the candidate statement, this one is about the CRB itself.

My students have their IBDP visual arts examination at the end of March 2011, and I plan to send the Candidate Record Booklets to our examiner around mid-March – so there is still more than two months to go before the CRBs need to be finished, packaged up and sent – but still, I like to get the students thinking about all the CRB requirements early so that we try at least to minimize the panic that some are prone to.

The End of the Essay?

The most recent coordinators’ notes (May 2010) had more than a few twists and turns, including the bombshell that IB will now accept oral, Powerpoint, or multimedia presentations.

For many years we’ve been hearing complaints from kids who HATE writing essays that they felt they could communicate their ideas better with a presentation. It was hard to argue with them but the reason was always that presentations are not transportable.

Moderation: Are you ready for it?

If you are going to send a sample for moderation here is a list of things to do before you submit the work. It is also a good checklist to help you when you feel overwhelmed preparing your sample to present to your MYP Coordinator.

- Have you used the Arts new guide published in 2008 to prepare and assess the work?

Because I still have moderation on the mind

OK, I seem to be stuck on a theme, but I promise you this is my last post in this direction for awhile.  Why not send the moderation team your electronic folders next year. Think about the savings in time and scanning/photocopying and shipping costs.

You could set up your students design folders in Wikispaces or Googledocs for example, create one page as the index to help the moderator sort through the material, a link to each student and to the background info, and a separate section for all the F3.1s and then all you have to do is Email the one link and share the file so that the moderation team has access.  How easy is that?  if you get organized early enough, the students do all the work of uploading their own work  so it turns the nightmare of organizing your moderation sample into the simple process of filling out 8 F3.1 forms and making the links.

Moderation Time

The Volcano in Iceland has put a bit of a damper on the Moderation meetings scheduled to take place this weekend.  The technology meeting was canceled altogether… in a manner of speaking.  Rather than flying to Madrid for a face to face meeting the technology team is meeting virtually, using a great set of  software packets.

Eluminate for discussions. It works much like Skype, however, has a much more professional look and feel and gives you a shared whiteboard as well that all the participants of the meeting can add notes to, or which can be controlled by the moderator of the meeting.

Electronic Design Folders

Providing the evidence for assessment in MYP Technology is done through the design folder.  Often a very heavily text based object.  But does it have to be this way? The assessment criteria ask for evidence of each stage of the design cycle organized under the appropriate assessment criterion headings, it does not say this has to be a written document.  What about creating a process journal in mp3 format?  Or a Design Folder Website?  What about a prototype designs, actually building rather than sketching?  A Blog is also a great format for a record of process, or perhaps an entire design folder video?
