Looking to the future: Great careers inspired by anthropology

photo

Many students of anthropology at the introductory level are still grappling with what they will do as their first career, or second, or third – let’s face it, they might have at least 4 or 5 before they retire. I recently stumbled upon the Capture Your Flag videos, in which ‘rising stars’ are interviewed about what influenced them leading up to their successes. While the videos are a little stiff in their set-up, they are concise with useful messages. Here are three of the most interesting ones:

Shake up the Chalk and Talk: Loving your essay

For northern hemisphere schools, it is likely that time of year when you begin to turn serious attention towards examination preparation, and this means honing those essay writing skills. For all schools, practice with essay writing skills is always welcome.

One of my favourite essay practice activities is based on speed dating. This activity encourages students to think quickly, and express themselves concisely in a detailed manner. build a collaborative learning environment by developing and sharing their own anthropological
interests. Perhaps this could even serve as inspiration for them to start their own class learning blog! Here
are some links to get you started…

Help! I have just been asked to teach IB Anthropology for September!

photo

There may be a few teachers in the northern hemisphere who are just about to embark on their first course of Social and Cultural Anthropology. The first step in preparing for this experience is to take joy in knowing that you are lucky enough to teach a course that is rich in its ability to help youth develop into open-minded, critical and creative people in a way that few other courses can. You are now part of a world where you get to come to work everyday and discuss the most pressing issues of the world within a solid academic framework. Ok, but you need to get a handle on what you are actually going to do…
