A museum to understand the value of tolerance and diversity

I have been delivering an Arts MYP workshop in Mexico and some local teachers recommended that I visit a new museum in Mexico city. The visit to the “Memory and Tolerance (Non-profit Organization)” had a very big impact on me.  

In its Vision the Museum wants “to create awareness through the memory of history and the significance of the Holocaust and other genocides; alerting the visitor as to the dangers of hate, discrimination and indifference, in order to thus create awareness, respect and responsibility in each individual.”

Human Library


I have just discovered yet another wonderful resource for all IB schools, regardless of whether or not they include anthropology in their program (although it is particularly well suited to anthropology!).

The Human Library is a project that directly addresses the need to get beyond our prejudices and assumptions about others. It provides a forum where people can pair up one-on-one and ask any questions – there are no stupid questions in this setting! Volunteers sign up to be ‘talking books’. People then come to the ‘library’ and sign out (or make appointments) with these people. A pacifist can sit down with someone who supports armed conflict and talk, a sighted person can sit and talk with a blind person, two blind people could share experiences, people from different religious backgrounds can learn about one another’s beliefs, and so on!
