Being Wrong

None of us like to be wrong but science writer Kathryn Schulz makes the case that being wrong provides powerful insights into cognition, human identify, social relationships and underpins the scientific method. Students always find visual illusions fascinating and they are also intrigued about how readily we can mis-remember. Her arguments are just as provocative.  Schulz argues that we should not see mistakes as diminishing you as a person; instead the human capacity to make mistakes actually makes us who we are. In her latest book “Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error” and this Ted Talk, Schulz explores the nature of error: are all mistakes the same, or are they all essentially the same? How does peer pressure, or crowd response, affect our capacity to make mistakes? How and why do we remember relatively insignificant mistakes for the rest of our lives, long after they have ceased to be relevant to anything? What is error-blindness? These are all topics that are relevant to the IB Psychology Course.

The Ted Talk should provoke a lively debate about our compulsion to be right and the need to acknowledge when we are not.

Molecular pistons and redox

A redox reaction has been used to move a molecular piston back and forth. It is hoped that this will allow nanomachines to make use of it.

The piston works with a man made molecule called a rotaxne. The rotaxne is a liner molecule with a napthalene complex at one end and sulfur containing group at the other end. The sliding part of the piston is made of six carbon rings, joined to form a hooped shaped positively charged ion.

Combustion kept simple

When teaching about combustion, we must remember to consider ‘complete’ and ‘incomplete’ combustion.

During complete combustion, the fuel will produce CO2 and H2O.

Water (5)

Tuesday was World Water Day 2011 and the theme for this year was ‘Water for Cities’. The theme for this weeks blogs posts will therefore be all about water.

So far, we have been focusing on the fact that water has a much higher boiling point than is predicted and that the reason could be pinned down to electronegativity.

So far, we have been focussing on the fact that water has a much higher boiling point than is prediced and that the reason could be pinned down to the hydrogen bond.

Today is World Water Day 2011 and the theme for this year is ‘Water for Cities’. The theme for this weeks blogs posts will therefore be all about water.

Water, dihydrogen monoxide, oxy-dihydride – what ever you call it, it means the same thing – water (H2O). Water is special to us for all sorts of reasons …

Fact or fiction quiz

This week has been ‘National Science and Engineering’ week in the UK.

The BBC has come up with this quiz (click here)to see how much you know about science fact or fiction – I scored 5/8 and was pleasantly surprised to find my rating as being ‘Graduate Student’ – not quite ‘Professor Standard’ but a least I wasn’t a ‘lab rat’ !

Finding the needle

You will have heard of the saying ‘like trying to find a needle in a haystack’ , well how about this one, ‘trying to find a single atom in a crystal’.

This phenomena has now been successfully carried out by a research team. Individual atoms of lanthanum have been observed in crystals of calcium titanate.
