Survival uncovers shocking human rights abuses in Ethiopia 22 February

http://www.survivalinternational.org/news/8115

Survival, a UK based organisation is an excellent source of case studies on the impacts of Globalisation (tourism, agriculture, mining…) on indigenous people. I have been to this area on a number of occasions and in 2010 I stopped at a huge cleared area of land which has been bought by Malaysians for the growth of palm oil! This internally displaces the tribal people, destroys their unique way of life and brings cultural change which is not a product of their own making.  Much of the soil in these areas is relatively poor and the vegetation is acacia scrub which can only sustain low populations densities and extensive agricultural practices.  Ethiopia is being bought by large corporations from many countries and the land is being taken out of traditional practice and used for agri-business where all the produce is exported. Does this make sense in a country where the population will double in the next 30 years and where there are food deficits. Land bought for such commercial purposes is taken from the people and reduces their capacity to sustain themselves. Trevor Cole 1.3.2012

Sustainable Tourism: A Key to Global Solutions

Posted: 02/26/2012

When most people think of tourism, they probably don’t think about an industry that can contribute to global solutions for the difficult challenges facing the planet.

Tourism is in fact, the fastest growing industry in the world. According to the U.N. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), tourism visits grew from about 900 to 940 million visitors last year and is projected to rise to 1.6 billion by the year 2020.

Global teacher shortage threatens progress on education

Disparities in development, gender imbalances and failing to fulfil the goal of ‘universal primary education’ are all included in this discussion.  There are opportunites to examine and discuss the reasons for and impacts of such educational deprivation.  The development gap widens and it is often the poorest of nations who are most affected.

Multi-dimensional poverty indices

It is well worth looking and using some of the information that Tony Burton (ex Chief Examiner) has produced in his Geo – Mexico publication.  http://geo-mexico.com/?p=5062

In this article he looks at poverty from a variety of perspectives in Latin America – hence giving students a global perspective – see below

Comparing Brazilian states with countries

Filed under: Geography — Tags: — Trevor Cole @ 11:22 am

A great visual resource which examines the reality within one of the BRICS – Brazil.  Brazil´s economy is widely hailed as an economic success story but the reality within the country is different, revealing a marked difference between the core areas (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo for example) and the periphery (Roraima/Rondonia – in Amazonas). Unequal development seen here by comparing the states of Brazil to countries looking at GDP, GDP per capita and also population.  A great opportunity to look at patterns and to discuss correlations between the three chosen indices. Is this a good way to look at development?

There are interesting comments in the responses below the illustrations which are good for discursive possibilities.  There are also links to simlar maps for China, USA and India
