The Rationale and Value of IA Fieldwork in International Education

Geography has always been an option for the discerning IB student who seeks a balance between the arts and the sciences; a subject which is both spatial and analytical.  In a World where the opportunities and challenges created by the interaction between people and their environment is increasingly a part of everyday life, regardless of subject choice, it makes sense to develop geographical insight and acumen as a means of understanding the world in which we live and also as a means of giving sustainability a chance.


One of the ways of getting the very best from any geography teaching program is the inclusion of relevant and thought provoking fieldwork.  This creates a stimulus and enthusiasm amongst students which is seldom forgotten and may in fact alter the way in which students think and act. Isn’t this an integral component of IB thinking? This is certainly an essential part of all IB Geography teaching and in the new program, which commences in 2009 it will be an inclusive component of the Higher Level and Standard Level programs.
