Let Them Eat Cake

It is the middle of summer and the commemoration of the storming of the Bastille – and French revolution – has created France’s national holiday.

The holiday marks the popularization of the revolution and move to constitutional government.  Prior to this event King Louis XVI had granted the French an elected assembly that was charged with writing a constitution but his move was more a mollification of non-aristocratic elites than granting equal rights to all French.
