The recent revelation that scientists may have been underestimating the number of stars in the universe all these years by as many as three times their already seemingly infinite number (http://mobile.nytimes.com/2010/12/02/science/space/02star.xml) reminded me of my first year physics professor. While teaching nuclear physics – which he was fond of pointing out chemists only pretended to understand – he once told us that all the nuclear waste produced in Canada in an entire year would fit in the room in which we were being taught.
