As teachers I am sure all of us have struggled with facilitating effective group work. Ensuring that all students are productive and that real engagement with the content is taking place poses a number of challenges. Students themselves often complain that group work is a waste of time. One way to approach these challenges is to have students examine a list of characteristics of effective groups and discuss these before group work takes place. With the start of another busy year  students might  be feeling stressed. Though we are teachers of content the emotional state of students obviously impacts their learning.
