A new way of learning?

Filed under: Arts,Supporting Learning Communities — Tim Cunningham @ 3:30 pm

I’ve always thought of myself as a ‘life-long’ learner, and clearly this is how my family see me. My wife and kids bought me a Bass Guitar for a Christmas gift! I’ve never played a musical instrument – other than the triangle in primary school – so the inclusion of a Bass Guitar in the house is a new challenge. We already have a full-sized drum kit, a keyboard and a range of electric and acoustic guitars that my kids play – seems that they desperately needed a Bassist!

And then reality took hold – how could I learn to play the Bass Guitar? I wasn’t sure I wanted a series of ‘lessons’ – not my idea of fun sitting with a teacher for an hour a week and going home £30 lighter. Being involved with online learning day to day, I wondered what would be on the web to help me learn to play. I was really quite amazed at the breadth and depth of the materials ‘out there’. This is what I have found in the few weeks since I opened my Christmas gift: all these are free, by the way!

A museum to understand the value of tolerance and diversity

I have been delivering an Arts MYP workshop in Mexico and some local teachers recommended that I visit a new museum in Mexico city. The visit to the “Memory and Tolerance (Non-profit Organization)” had a very big impact on me.

In its Vision the Museum wants “to create awareness through the memory of history and the significance of the Holocaust and other genocides; alerting the visitor as to the dangers of hate, discrimination and indifference, in order to thus create awareness, respect and responsibility in each individual.”

Personal Engagement in the Arts

The objectives of the Arts subjects define what the student will be able to accomplish as a result of studying the art form implemented by the school.

It is interesting to see the image shown in figure 1 of the Arts guide 2008 on page 5. The arts specific objectives interrelate with each other and form the basis of the student’s experience in the arts. We can see that Personal Engagement is in the centre of the diagram surrounding the student. Personal engagement connects directly with each of the other objectives.

Real life context in Arts classes

The Areas of Interaction contribute to shape, organize and enhance teaching within our disciplines. They should have a central part of our teaching. In other words, if teaching is truly generated by, or focused through, the areas of interaction, then students’ work will reflect their understanding of the areas.

I like to work in each year group or MYP level with ideas that could be interesting to the students.
