This week, students in the Northern Hemisphere will write their final examinations. As their pens lift off the paper, their thoughts will inevitably turn to the holidays ahead. With this in mind, I focus my attention on the anthropology of tourism. There is so much fabulous material written on this topic that I will post several times on the theory, practice and enjoyment of touring the world.

Perhaps my favourite reading on the theme of tourism is Jamaica Kincaid’s A Small Place. Kincaid, a literary author, presents a sobering, passionate and engaging account of a local perspective on North American and European tourists visiting the Caribbean country of Antigua. After reading this, it may be useful to check out the writing of Xianghong Feng who discusses the importance of tourism and how local people – in her case, in China – can stay involved in the industry.

For a more general look at the anthropology of tourism as a sub-discipline, start by checking out the University of Indiana’s site. John Urry’s The Tourist Gaze and Dean MacCannell’s The Tourist, are also both wonderful starting places for understanding the ‘tourist gaze’ and dynamics of tourism.

If you are a teacher thinking about the holidays, and wondering how the structure of weekends and summers came to be, check out Witold Rybczynski’s Waiting for the Weekend. Rybczynski gives us a deeper understanding of the meaning of leisure, particularly within a European context.

Stay tuned for museum recommendations and regional studies of tourism. In the meantime, please let me know if you have come across engaging resources on the topic of tourism. I would also love to hear about any travel plans you have afoot!

I now turn my attention to research techniques. It is important for students to think about what research techniques they will use in conjunction with their research question, as this will ensure that their research is feasible.

Here are four things to think about in terms of techniques…

1. Permission & ethics
Before using any research techniques, candidates need to have a clear plan in terms of ensuring that their research will be ethical. This includes considering their own positionality, considering the effect the research might have on the subjects/informants; being open with informants about the focus and intent of the research; and gaining clear permission for research.

2. Justifying the techniques
Students need to be thoughtful about why they are using a particular technique – is it for their own convenience? Is it the most appropriate technique from the perspective of gathering data? Is it an appropriate technique from the perspective of the informants and context?

3. Revisiting data
Fieldwork conducted over a period of time is usually stronger than fieldwork conducted in just a few days or even one week. The best projects allow students to engage in a process where they collect data, stand back and reflect, collect more data, reflect some more, and then perhaps continue to collect data. This might involve observing, distributing a questionnaire, then conducting interviews. Alternatively, students might interview the subjects using a focus-group format, followed by individual interviews. Or they could interview the same people more than once. Stand-alone questionnaires do not always work well as they often end up being more of a statistical exercise than something that upholds the spirit of fieldwork.

4. Online research
Online research is becoming more common in anthropology. Before a student decides to focus on online research they should examine their own motives: is this a topic and context that really interests them? Or is this a convenient way to do their research? If they decide to pursue online research, the context of their study will need to be carefully narrowed. In terms of techniques, Christine Hines’ Virtual Ethnography is a good source for teachers and students. Finally, schools need to educate students about cyber safety. For example, it would be inappropriate for high school students to find informants online and then meet them in person.

What are your experiences with students and research techniques? Any great examples to share?
