One of my students needs extra tutoring in music theory. What can I do?

Filed under: Music — Sergio Espinosa @ 4:17 pm

While every teachers wishes that all the students in the class had the same theory level, this situation is more the exception than the norm. The students in class have often very different levels of knowledge and skills in music theory. This creates a challenge to teachers in terms of organizing the class materials. Some teachers solve this problem by offering extra tutoring or referring students that need extra help to private tutors. However, in some schools, due to the financial situation of the students, this option is not available. Here is the link to one web site that could help in these cas:

IB Music Prescribed Work: Yellow River Piano Concerto : some issues in the score.

Filed under: Music — Sergio Espinosa @ 2:09 pm

Dear IB Music Teachers,

These days before the Christmas Holidays I am working on the Triple A Workshop IB Music Prescribed Works that I will be offered in 2012. I have noticed that the  score of  Xian’s Yellow River Piano Concerto has some potentially delicate issues. I am referring to the Ernest Eulenburg no. 8111 score that I assume that must of the teachers are already using or are planning to to use. Here are the issues:

Copland Got It First!!!

Copland got it first!

A few days ago the UNESCO named Mariachi Music “Intangible Heritage of The Humanity” (see article). This could be an interesting point for those IB educators teaching Copland’s El Salon Mexico.  Copland recognized many year before the UNESCO the value of Mexican music as represented by Mariachi groups.

Musical Links Investigation: Cultures vs. Compositions

Filed under: Music — Sergio Espinosa @ 2:15 pm

Dear IB Colleagues,

During the recent Triple A IB Music Prescribed Works participants discussed the topic of ‘establishing links’. The conversation immediately moved towards the MLI and the ‘required links’. One of the participants commented about the emerging trend where students focus more on the examples than on the cultures. This is contrary to the spirit and requirements of the IB Music curriculum. The purpose of the MLI is to explore cultures. The musical examples are just a way to illustrate the musical characteristics of the selected culture.

Billy the Kid, Copland and El Salon Mexico

Filed under: Music — Sergio Espinosa @ 10:07 pm

This morning a good friend of mine (Paul Clark) called my attention to a BBC podcast about Copland’s famous ballet “Billy The Kid”.  The podcast provides excellent information about Copland’s style and it is certainly pertinent to the study of Copland’s work from the point of view of IB because there are many references to “El Salon Mexico” and Copland’s orchestration in general. I hope you enjoy it. The link is here. I hope you enjoy it and I hope it is usefull for you and your studnents.

Best wishes,
