Carrier IQ – Tracking the News as ‘IT’ Breaks

Filed under: ITGS — Barbara Stefanics @ 4:11 pm

Carrier IQ (CIQ) has been secretly used with smart phones by manufacturers and carriers without owners’ knowledge. This piece of code can record about  person’s location, keystrokes and websites visited. For full article visit “US senator calls for answers on phone ‘snooping’ “. An ‘opt-out’ option for the end-user has not been provided.

The questions are just beginning to emerge – Which types of smart phones have Carrier IQ? How is the data collected? Where is the data stored? Who has access to the data? How is it being used? Digital Citizenship

Filed under: ITGS — Barbara Stefanics @ 10:24 am

With school begin is staff  review guidelines and rules and how they will present these to students. Digital Citizenship is a topic that begins in kindergarten and extends throughout the school. It must be put into context and daily practice. Waiting to address Digital Citizenship in an ITGS class is simply too late.

A most successful approach to promoting Digital Citizenship is by having students write the guidelines in language that they understand. The result of one such project shows the rules as interpreted by Grade 8 students (Flatclassroom Projects) and promoted with other fellow students.

Ethics… and Photojournalism

Filed under: ITGS — Barbara Stefanics @ 11:42 am

The July 4th  Newsweek cover and news article created by Tina Brown, Newsweek editor, showing Kate Middleton with a middle-aged Princess Diana has caused significant uproar across the Internet. Not only the cover photo has raised serious ethical issues, but the content of the article as well.
